The village Emporio is one of the biggest villages with the largest permanent population. The village is built on a plain, and for many years was the island's commercial centre. At the entrance of the village, is the church of St. Nicholas Marmarites, built of marble from the ruins of the ancient temple of the goddess Vassilia, which originally occupied this site. Emporio also had two castles both built by the Venetians, Casteli and north of the village a strong, square building named Goulas. In the castles, the village people protected themselves from the pirates. Those castles are still visible. One of the oldest church on the island, Palia Panagia which is famous for the ornately carved wooden dome on its bell-tower, extracts the attention of every visitor. It's a quaintness village with several shops and a few taverns-restaurants.
